Your base on Manchester Street
Christchurch is a compact, walkable city. From our front door at 42 Manchester Street, most central attractions are within a 10 to 20 minute walk. The Avon River winds through the city centre just two blocks east, and the Botanic Gardens begin where the commercial grid gives way to open green space.
Christchurch has rebuilt itself with care since the 2011 earthquake. You will see heritage stone buildings standing beside crisp new timber and glass structures. Walking the central streets is the quickest way to understand how the city holds its history and its future in the same frame.

Exploring the Botanic Gardens
A 15 minute walk from Kingsmere Retreat brings you to the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Founded in 1863, the gardens cover more than 21 hectares of mature trees, themed plantings, and open lawns. The rose garden peaks in the summer months, but the native New Zealand section and the riverbank walks hold interest year round. The Avon River runs along the garden's northern edge, and you can follow its path all the way back toward the central city.
The Arts Centre and cultural heritage
The Arts Centre on Worcester Street is the cultural heart of central Christchurch. This Gothic Revival complex was built for the University of Canterbury in the 1870s and has been carefully restored as a home for galleries, independent boutiques, and working studios. You can watch craftspeople at work, browse curated exhibitions, and take in a performance at the theatre on site.
The Centre regularly hosts physical exhibitions and live events. Ask our reception team what is on during your visit, and we will point you toward the open studios and performances that suit your interests. The building itself is worth the walk: stone arches, timber beams, and cobbled courtyards that feel a world away from the modern commercial grid.
Shopping and dining in the central city
Manchester Street places you within easy walking distance of Christchurch's main retail and food districts. Cashel Street's modern boutiques are a short walk west. Riverside Market, on the east side of the Avon, is the city's busiest food hub: butchers, fishmongers, bakeries, and small restaurants under one roof. The lanes around it hold coffee bars, bookshops, and stores selling New Zealand-made goods.
The city centre stays active into the evening. After a day of shopping or browsing, you are only minutes from your suite at Kingsmere Retreat. Our dining room is open for dinner service, and our bar is available for late-evening drinks if you want to round off the night closer to home.
Punting on the Avon River
For a slower view of the city, take a punt along the Avon. A guide poles a flat-bottomed boat through the Botanic Gardens or the central city stretch of the river, and the pace lets you take in the weeping willows, stone bridges, and old garden plantings from water level. Trips run through the day and take about 30 minutes.
The punts are suitable for all ages, and the commentary from your guide covers the river's history and the gardens that border it. It is a calm way to spend an afternoon before dinner back at the hotel. Our concierge can check departure times and help you book a seat on the boat.
Canterbury Museum and local history
The Canterbury Museum sits at the edge of the Botanic Gardens, a short walk from the hotel. The museum holds one of the country's strongest Antarctic collections, with artefacts and displays covering the early expeditions that departed from Lyttelton. The Maori heritage galleries cover the deep history of the Canterbury Plains and the wider South Island.
Allow a couple of hours if you want to take the main galleries at a relaxed pace. The museum is a good pairing with a morning walk through the gardens. Entry is by donation, and the building itself is part of Christchurch's heritage streetscape.
Modern architecture and the city rebuild
Christchurch's rebuild has produced some of the most considered new architecture in New Zealand. The Cardboard Cathedral, designed by Shigeru Ban, is a short walk from the hotel. Tūranga, the central city library on Cathedral Square, is a striking timber-clad building with open viewing decks on its upper floors.
Our staff can suggest a walking route that takes in the most interesting new buildings in the neighbourhood. The route works well as a 60 to 90 minute loop from the hotel, with coffee stops along the way. Walking through the central city gives you a clear sense of how Christchurch has responded to change without erasing its older character.
Day trips to the Port Hills and Lyttelton
If you have a free afternoon, the Port Hills rise to the south of the city and give you clear views across Christchurch, the Canterbury Plains, and the Southern Alps. You can drive up via Dyers Pass Road, walk one of the ridge tracks, or take the Christchurch Gondola from the Heathcote base for a short ride to the summit lookout.
On the seaward side of the hills sits Lyttelton, a working port with a strong creative community. The Saturday market is the weekly highlight, with local produce, coffee, and crafts in the town centre. Allow half a day for the round trip from the hotel. Local transport and getting around
Christchurch is built on a flat grid, and most central attractions are within a comfortable walk of Kingsmere Retreat. For longer trips, the city bus network runs frequent services through the central exchange on the Bus Interchange on Lichfield Street. Taxis and ride-share cars are easy to book from the hotel or flag on the main streets.
If you plan to explore the wider Canterbury region — Akaroa, the thermal pools at Hanmer Springs, or the wineries of Waipara — our concierge can arrange a rental car or connect you with a local tour operator. We will make sure you have clear directions and a sensible plan for getting back to the hotel.
Seasonal events and festivals
Christchurch keeps a full calendar of physical events through the year. The World Buskers Festival fills the central city with street performance in the summer. Mid-winter brings light installations and night markets to the central squares and Hagley Park. Food and wine festivals, garden shows, and live music run across the spring and autumn months.
